Not so scary books for those of us who like a little fright
I don’t really do Halloween, but I do enjoy a good spooky read or two in October. There is just something about the weather here in Kodiak that makes me want to snuggle into my chair, watch the wind and the rain lash at the windows while listening to the buoys ring out in the ocean. It’s getting darker and definitely cooler.

“Frankenstein” by Mary Shelly Mary Shelly is considered the Mother of Science Fiction, and it is no wonder why. It has been a while since I’ve read this my memory is a little hazy. The story is told through a narrator who picks up a strange man. He then retells the story of Dr. Frankenstein and his monster. I may have to revisit this this next week.https://amzn.to/3ZKKPOL

Jamie Jo Wright After Listening to “Souls of Lost Lake” and reading ” The Vanishing at Castle Moreau” I am in love with Jamie Jo Wright’s books. She writes beautiful scenery, compelling characters and plots that kept me reading way longer than I should have most nights. “The Vanishing at Castle Moreau” had the best ending. The 2 books I’ve read so far are dual timelines that all tie together in unique ways. I have just pre-ordered her latest book “The Lost Boys of Barlow Theater” and cannot wait to dive in. https://amzn.to/3rEbFLU

Frank Peretti Frank Peretti books are dark and a rather bit more scary. They deal with the unseen things of the world, specially the angels and demons and how they can affect people. I can only read one or two a year because they do get intense. The writing is amazing and if you have a vivid imagination like I do, they will keep you up at night. https://amzn.to/3rEfG2O

“Something Wicked This Way Comes” by Ray Bradbury This is my all time favorite Ray Bradbury book. As a matter of fact, I picked it for our October read for the book club at work. To 13 year olds friends wonder what the carnival that has come to town is doing. There’s mysterious sideshows, strangers that just seem off and towns people go missing. It’s a great story of friendship and family. I have heard that the opposite of this book would be “Dandelion Wine” also by Bradbury. One is dark and sinister while the other is a little more lighter. I really recommend both. https://amzn.to/3rwXet3

Edgar Alan Poe It’s October, you need Edgar Allen Poe. Anything by him is amazing. My favorite is “The Tell Tale Heart” though. For those of you who like audio versions, may I recommend Vincent Price reading “The Raven”? Or if you like things a little lighter, I still enjoy “The Simpson’s Treehouse of Terror” versions of Poe’s stories. Just read Edgar Allen Poe! https://amzn.to/48Fok1K

I know that there aren’t as many on this list but, several authors write several books in the Thriller genre and I think this should do for now. I’m off to read “Something Wicked This Way Comes” for my book club meeting at the end of the month. If you have any that I should add, let me know in the comments. They may make next year’s list. 😉
I have set the LORD always before me:
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth:
my flesh also shall rest in hope. Psalm 16:8-9
